On 17 September 2025, Henny Theeboom celebrates an extraordinary milestone—her 100th birthday!

Born in the Netherlands in 1925, Henny’s century of life has been marked by resilience, curiosity, and a love of learning—particularly through the game of bridge.

Henny emigrated to Australia in 1949, arriving in Sydney with her husband and a three-month-old baby.

Her sister introduced her to bridge, suggesting that they learn together— at the Sydney Bridge Club, in Goulburn Street. At the time, Ron Klinger was a member and director, and Henny took her first lessons in the game that would become a lifelong interest.

Although her sister didn’t continue, Henny carried on. She read books about bridge, studied techniques, and sharpened her skills at bridge clubs in Sydney, Brisbane, and Noosa, while also enjoying the social side of the game. Widowed in her late 40s, bridge remained a constant interest—both a mental challenge and a connection to others. She continues to play twice a week, often partnering with her daughter-in-law.

Henny’s approach to bridge has always combined discipline and enjoyment. She still studies and plays online, embracing technology with enthusiasm. “Read, study, practise—and play bridge on the computer,” she advises newcomers to the game. “And find a good partner!”

A healthy life has also been part of Henny’s longevity. She has never smoked or drank, walks daily, and in her 50s began attending the gym every morning. She has always owned a dog—her current companion is Nikki, a loyal poodle who, she admits, sleeps on her bed.

These days, Henny lives with her son, maintains her interest in current affairs, and enjoys weekly physiotherapy sessions to stay active. She still walks, still reads, and still plays bridge seriously.

With a century behind her and no signs of slowing, Henny is an inspiration—not just to bridge players, but to anyone looking for a life well played.
